Srila Giri Maharaja – Guru: “Beyond Our Thinking”

In response to our post: Analyzing Self-Analysis & “The Duties of An Acharya.”

Mark Viswambhardas Bartolome asked: “Where is my acharya?”

This was my response.

First we shall ask “Where am I, where is the disciple?” Before the acharya manifests, the qualities of a disciple must be present. Otherwise, the guru may be standing directly in front of a person, and he will not be recognized as the guru.

The qualities of a disciple develop as faith develops. That development procedes in this way:

ādau śraddhā tataḥ sādhu-
saṅgo ‘tha bhajana-kriyā

“In the beginning there must be faith. Then one becomes interested in associating with pure devotees. Thereafter one is initiated by the spiritual master Read More...

The following are excerpts from an email to Sriman Uddharan dasa Adhikari dated October 23, 2016 followed by some additional comments.

“What we received from our spiritual master we understood only in a rough estimation. Now, things have come in such a way that we have to scrutinize ourselves in every position. We have to analyze ourselves. Atma-niksepa, self-analysis has begun. We are under trial. What we received from our spiritual master, in what way have we received it? Properly, or only showingly?”

For years I have been troubled by the transcription of Srila Guru Maharaja’s words used in that text. I’m sure it is taken from this recording: 81.08.12-13 aka 12/13-8-81

Srila Giri Maharaja: “The Situation” (Part 2)—”Sunlight is the best disinfectant.”

Dear _____________,

Please accept my humble obeisances in remembrance of my Divine Masters.

I am replying to this email we received from you on Oct 18, 2016:

With the current situation in Srila Sridhara Maharaja’s Navadwipa Math I am surprised that Bhakti Kanan Girl Maharaja has not commented on it, especially since he was so vocal after Govinda Maharaja left. And, as many have appreciated his stand at that time, I wonder why such silence now??

For me, the battles being raged for supremacy and power are not what Guru Maharaja expounded. It is the science of self realization that we aspire to, not group or party realization.

I do not want my details posted on a public domain but would appreciate Kanan Giri Maharaja’s observations on this matter.

Dear _________________,

Please accept my humble obeisances in remembrance of my Divine Masters.

I appreciate your questions and will answer them as best I can with reference to background and context.

First, you wonder why I have not commented on “the current situation in Srila Sridhara Maharaja’s Navadwipa Math.” The word you use, “situation” is very broad and can encompass many, many things. If you will present your question in a more specific way I will try to give a proper answer. Until then I will answer in the following way.

As you noted I “was so vocal after Srila Govinda Maharaja left” and you wonder “why such silence now?” The explanation is this: Srila Govinda Maharaja gave specific instructions in his Last Will and Testament (“LWT”) Read More...

“It is verified.” by Swami B. K. Giri

My dandavats,

I have sometimes made the point that disciples should not be overly interested in their param guru(s), a disciple’s connection is with his immediate guru.
While doing some reading this morning I found confirmation of that point:

A disciple’s connection is with his immediate guru, not a param guru.

Morning Walk—February 3, 1976, Māyāpura

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: I remember one time Kārttikeya Mahārāja was chanting to a picture of Bhaktisiddhānta. You chastised him and said, “What is your connection with Bhaktisiddhānta? Your connection is with me.”

Prabhupāda: Who said?

Tamāla Kṛṣṇa: You did.

Sudāmā: You did. I remember.

Srila Giri Maharaja “Krishna Consciousness and Householder Life”

BKG Ukraine

Date: 9/3/16

Dear Sriman Jagadananda dasa Adhikari,

Please accept my blessings and well-wishes.

I read your below email soon after I received it. Unfortunately I could not reply immediately. I also felt some of your concerns would work themselves out over time by the influence of your sadhana and, through your devotion, Krishna would reveal something within you to satisfy your heart’s inquiries.

It is the tendency of children to want immediate gratification. We are, in many ways, like children. When we discover the precepts of Krishna Consciousness through reading the scriptures, developing faith in Sri Guru, Vaishnavas, etc., we must be excited to learn that there is a source of answers for all our questions, doubts and concerns. Not only that, but the source is impeccable, infallible and absolute. Why then should I not get immediate and perfect answers to all the inquiries needed to feel fully satisfied?

We feel the need to surrender, following the Lord’s instruction sarva dharman parityaja… . Having heard His perfect instruction, with the obvious truth of it resonating with our heart’s desire to be a soul surrendered to the all-perfect, loving, beautiful and sweet Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna, which is also our obvious relationship with Him, we conceive of our tendency towards such surrender to be very strong and certain. Why then should all the results of perfect surrender not be immediately realized?

But if it were so (our tendency to surrender was strong and certain), then why have we not attained all that we have been told should be attained through surrender to the Supreme Lord?

The answers should also be obvious.

Srila Giri Maharaja “Srimati Lalita Devi’s Avirbhava Maha-Mahotsava”

On hearing of Sripada Bhakti Prasun Aranya Maharaja’s disappearance I sent the following message to Sriman Uddharan dasa Adhikari. I believe it is also appropriate with respect to today’s celebration of Sri Lalita Devi’s avirbhava maha mahotsava.

Anyone who knows him (Sripada B.P. Aranya Maharaja) will remember him as a gentle Vaishnava who had no malice in his heart and who was very kind and gracious to everyone who had the good fortune to enter his orb of influence.

As an example; once while I was doing some seva in Govardhana we went on a pilgrimage of Vrndavana. I always kept close to Sripada Aranya Maharaja, who often took my hand to help him up some steps, onto a rickshaw, etc. After visiting Varshana, where I helped his Holiness up each of what Read More...
