Commentary by Indra Bandhu dasa:
By the mercy of Srila Gurudeva, bhakta Ben and I set out to distribute books from SCS Math’s Salem, OR ashram, Sri Govinda Divya-vani Seva Ashram. Going everywhere we can, today we went to the Lancaster Mall and it’s connected movie theatre Regal Cinemas. We circled the outside of the complex asking that each person we met make an offering for a book of scripture to support the local ashram’s mission in support of devotional service. All books include a business card and an SCS Math sticker with NJ contact info, so that they can contact the SCS Math and the Sri Govinda Ashram to find out further information. This process is a spiritual transaction, and we require a minimum $5 for each book. The person purchasing a book receives sukrti. They are receiving living scripture and the words of our Guru’s of the SCS Math, and having a favorable exchange with an aspiring devotee of the Lord they are happy. This all bodes well for them, and is great fortune.
First, bhakta Ben and I went to one of the mall entrances and spoke to a young man who was leaving. Zach was in a hurry but wanted to make an offer to the ashram, he said he didn’t even need a book, identifying himself as agnostic, but after speaking with him he decided to take “Home Comfort” and said he would check it out, passing it on to another when done if he so wished. Several people did not purchase books, but wished us luck and said “God bless!”. We are already blessed to be allowed to distribute this wonderful scripture, and understand that only the Lord can bless the jivas (souls). We walked down towards the theatre entrance, and I saw a young man named Darien hanging up his phone, he purchased “Sri Guru and His Grace” while patiently listening to me for a few minutes despite his friend pulling up at the curb. Bhakta Ben and I then met a young couple leaving the theatre, Angel and Izel, who were happy seeing bhakta Ben and purchased a “Search for Sri Krishna”. They seemed to be in a delightful trance as I talked with them. We talked with several more people briefly who declined books, but a young woman Jade expressed that she would like to come to the ashram if her parents would let her. Another young woman, Mei Lin, did not live in town, but expressed interest, took a card with the ashram and website information, and received “Home Comfort” for her sweet interest in the Sri Govinda Divya-vani Seva Ashram, as the servitors here aspire to become disciples at the lotus feet of Srila BK Giri Maharaja.
I learned today to further hone my attempts in serving Sri Sri Guru Gauranga, grateful for Their merciful waves and the power of sukrti acting on some of these fortunate souls. Sriman Radha-Syama dasa brahmachari has shared with me about the position of the aspiring disciple. We are very far from the ideal of devotion, in no way qualified, but we are the property of the Lord, and so must give our utmost sincere efforts in performing our reciprocal function. Sri Sri Guru Gauranga’s mercy, grace, and spontaneity is infinitely more powerful than my faults and lack of capacity. We do what we can to the best of our ability because They are the ideal, they are worthy of serving, our only shelter, and worth our lives and souls to please. Any progress and attempt made in this path is to our eternal benefit, and to that of all those we positively come into contact with in our association. He is the autocrat, and we may be utilized and discarded, but that moment in service is worth everything. We are for service, this is the only way.
Since he came to the ashram, bhakta Ben has undergone many transformations, far beyond the loss of his hair. He has learned much about the conception of our lineage and the divine flow of consciousness in our parampara. Bhakta Ben had some initial apprehension approaching people, talking to the public and distributing (working in the ashram, flyering, and asking others to take scripture). Upon hearing from both Radha-Syama dasa and myself, and realizing that he is offering these people their true life and fortune, and that it matters not what they think of him if he is acting in a proper manner, he began to become more confident and cheerful in his approach. Several people interacted positively with bhakta Ben, and upon hearing he was new, Zach even tried to encourage him in his distribution. He made signifigant progress in his distribution abilities.
Bhakta Ben when asked of what he learned about distribution today said, “I have social anxiety which manifests itself as a paralyzing fear of interacting with people in certain ways, and Sriman Radha-Syama dasa brahmachari and yourself [Indra Bandhu dasa] explained things to me and helped me to understand the importance of distribution. The importance of distribution is to glorify the Lord and to bring people to the Lord, to bring them mercy, for people to have the mercy that we all so desperately are searching for ourselves. After spending some time with Indra Bandhu dasa distributing books, my paralyzing fear began to melt away. When Angel passed laksmi to me, it was as if his whole aura lit up. It felt like a deeply spiritual moment that I had never experienced before, and that is when the I also realized Guru’s Divine Grace can act in my life and others lives I come into contact with. Hare Krishna!”
Sriman Radha-Syama dasa brahmacari has been focussing us here on the lotus feet of Srila BK Giri Maharaja, Acaryya of the SCS Math, and merciful guardian of this ashram in Salem, OR, and bhakta Ben’s experience, doing work inside the ashram, and carrying the asraya of the ashram with him as he attempts to distribute, as well as what he’s been hearing from Sriman Radha-Syama dasa brahmachari about distributing since he’s moved into the Sri Govinda Divya-vani Seva Ashram under the shelter of the Acharya of the SCS Math, Srila B.K. Giri Maharaja, has increasingly inspired me as well. We hope that these pictures and this short post will inspire others too, kindling the fire which will warm them on these cold cold days, taking the Word of the Lord to others. Hari Bol!
