“Who’s allowed to initiate in my line?” — Srila Giri Maharaja

BKG_CA_1996Srila Giri Maharaja recently received the following question from our “Contact” Page:

Hare Krsna Maharaja,

Please can you tell me the names of all the Swamis in your line who are allowed to initiate disciples? Do you have a restricted list or is any Sanyassi allowed to initiate in your line?

Thanks,

Srila Giri Maharaja’s Response

Subject: Who’s allowed to initiate in my line?
Date: September 5, 2014

Dear Mr. ____________,

Please accept my well-wishes.

Srila Bhakti Sundara Govinda Maharaja was selected by Srila Sridhara Maharaja as his successor.

Srila Govinda Maharaja, in turn, named six acharyas of which I am one.

Srila Sridhara Maharaja believed that generally the current acharya will name his successor or successors. When selecting our guru, we should first look to those selected by the previous acharya to continue the disciplic succession.

However, our disciplic succession gives the greatest attention to the shiksha guru parampara. Therefore, no disciple is barred from initiating if he feels genuine inspiration that he must do so to maintain the disciplic succession of his guru. If he sees no one else qualified to perform the function of guru then he will feel the need to take up the task himself.

Considering all of the above, it is the duty of the sincere seeker to select his guru. He must select one in whom he can place his full faith following the injunction yasya deve para bhaktir, tatha deve tatha gurau, “Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the guru and Krishna are all the imports of the Vedic knowledge automatically revealed.”
